چکیده

In the past, research to improve FES-LCE training focused on improving stimulation patterns, training protocols, control algorithms, and biomechanical modeling. Pedalling cadence is one parameter that has received very little attention until recently. Recent research from our laboratory has shown that the fatigue rate of electrically stimulated muscle decreases as pedalling cadence decreases. This recent research only tested fatigue rate over a 5-min period. If lower cadence cycling produces decreased fatigue compared to traditional cycling cadences (3550 rev⋅min) for the duration of a typical FES-LCE session, higher muscle forces will be generated at the lower cadences throughout the training session. The higher forces at lower cadences could lead to an improvement in FES-LCE training.

Maximizing muscle force via low-cadence functional electrical stimulation cycling.

OBJECTIVE This study investigated the effect of pedal cadence upon torque production, power output and muscle fatigue rates during functional electrical stimulation evoked cycling in spinal cord injured individuals. SUBJECTS All subjects had complete thoracic spinal cord injuries T4-T9 (ASIA A) and had been functional electrical stimulation training regularly for at least 6 months. METHODS ...

Development of an isokinetic functional electrical stimulation cycle ergometer.

An isokinetic functional electrical stimulation leg cycle ergometer (iFES-LCE) was developed for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). The iFES-LCE was designed to allow cycle training over a broad range of pedalling cadences (5-60 rev/min) to promote both muscular strength and cardiorespiratory fitness. A commercially available motorized cycle ergometer was integrated with a custom built ...

Stability of pedalling mechanics during a prolonged cycling exercise performed at different cadences.

The aim of this study was to analyse the effect of pedalling rate on the pattern of mechanical torque application and on neuromuscular fatigue during prolonged cycling exercise. Eleven well-trained individuals performed three 1-h pedalling sessions, at 50 rev.min-1, 110 rev.min-1 and a freely chosen cadence, at an intensity corresponding to 65% of their maximal aerobic power. The mechanical tor...

Functional electrical stimulation leg cycle ergometry (FES-LCE), which is often used as exercise for people with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) has been recently applied in the motor rehabilitation of stroke patients. Recently completed studies show controversial results, but with a tendency to positive training effects. Technology involved at the moment is identical to the one used in FES-LCE for SC...
